Securecom acquires Prophecy Networks

Auckland, 21st September 2023

Auckland-headquartered specialist, managed security services provider Securecom, has acquired Hawkes Bay network solutions provider Prophecy Networks as it grows its national presence. Prophecy Networks will operate as Securecom Hawkes Bay, bringing valuable additional capabilities to the acquiring organisation. A new business plan incorporating the combined managed services, networking, cloud and security solutions strengths of both companies is in development, with Prophecy senior manager Rachael Price appointed General Manager of the company’s Hawkes Bay operation.

Securecom Managing Director Greg Mikkelsen says “While we’ve specialised in security, network, cloud, and general managed services, the acquisition provides the opportunity to diversify geographically and to further expand our rapidly growing Network and Managed Services capability. With added enterprise networking capabilities, especially in Wellington, our growth aspirations are well served.”

As a New Zealand owned and operated managed security services provider with more than 200 clients across all industry sectors and a 21-year history of success, Securecom is looking beyond Auckland for continued scale. The ambition is accelerated with the acquisition; founded in 2001, Prophecy is a recognised brand with offices in Napier and Wellington.

With Prophecy’s founders looking to exit the business and move into consultancy roles, Mikkelsen says there was a desire to put the business in good hands and see staff well looked after. “There’s a strong alignment of values and culture between our organisations, and we have retained all operational staff and are employing additional staff in both Hawkes Bay and Wellington to meet demand. The synergy we’ve found with Prophecy is a combination of capabilities reflecting the ongoing convergence of network and security functions.”

Promoted to Regional General Manager, Price recently celebrated 12 years with Prophecy Networks, most recently as CFO and Head of Managed Services. “Joining forces with Securecom extends our footprint and solutions and services capabilities, resulting in an enhanced value proposition for the customers of both organizations,” she says. “With the expanded solutions on offer from Securecom, Prophecy’s existing clients can move towards a single services provider for all their IT needs – and with security a pressing concern for every business today, an integrated approach delivers a real advantage.”

All contracts with existing Prophecy clients remain in place, while the Securecom product set is expected to accelerate growth in the new regions. Mikkelsen notes an anticipation of significant growth in Hawkes Bay for security, network and hosting services given innovation and growth within the region. By the same token, he says Securecom customers now enjoy access to solutions and services now on board from Prophecy. “Specifically, we expect new demand for CATO Secure Access Service Edge solutions, reflecting the convergence between security and networking,” Mikkelsen notes.

While the acquisition was completed by March 31, work continues in bedding down the structure and service alignment, with Securecom investing in growing its presence in the wider Hawkes Bay region extending from Gisborne down to Central Hawkes Bay and across to Manawatu, consolidating data centres, and introducing clients to the full solutions portfolio now available from the combined entities. “As this acquisition beds in, we’ll be looking for further opportunities which come with scale, breadth of services, and a more complete offering which accurately meets the needs of our customers,” Mikkelsen concludes.

Leadership Changes at Securecom

Auckland, 3rd April 2023

Securecom today announced a series of internal changes to its leadership team, which are effective from 1st April 2023.

Greg Mikkelsen (former Sales and Marketing Director) is promoted to Managing Director. Former Managing Director Chris New takes up the position of Board Chair.

At the same time, Dave Shennan moves from his role as Director of Cyber Security to replace Greg as Sales and Marketing Director, with Dave being replaced by Jason Wild, who is promoted and joins the senior leadership team as Head of Cyber Security.

Chris New comments:

“When Greg and I decided to take a stake in Securecom in 2016, I was appointed to the role of Managing Director and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the role, more than tripling the size of the business and signing off on what will be another record year for us in 2023. The time is right for Securecom to strengthen our board governance. As part of our succession plan, I’m delighted that Greg has agreed to take on the running of the business on a day-to-day basis. Greg has a long track record of success, is hugely respected both within the industry and in Securecom. The board has every confidence that Greg will excel in his role and will continue to support our customers and our people. I’m looking forward to being Board Chair and stepping away from operational detail, which will give me the time to focus on strategy.”

Greg Mikkelsen comments:

“Chris has been an instrumental part of our success and will remain a key part of Securecom in his Board Chair role and will maintain his shareholding. I’m excited about becoming Managing Director and continuing to provide our customers with the exceptional level of service that is synonymous with the Securecom brand. We continue to invest and grow in Cyber Security, Networking and Cloud Services and with Dave Shennan leading our sales and marketing activities, I am very confident that our growth will continue. Having Jason Wild with his significant Cyber Security experience joining the Senior Leadership Team reflects the importance of this element of our business, and I am proud to be leading our talented and passionate team into the next phase of our growth.”

Improving uptime, security and lowering costs at FlexR

Auckland, New Zealand, October 2022

FlexR is a company that was formed by 2 kiwi entrepreneurs having a problem with their original business. Their fuel card business was growing too fast. Their legacy system of manually inputted data, semi-automated invoicing, and managing customer accounts couldn’t keep up with the demand.

A solution was needed that would enable bulk processing of tasks and automating of functions and would be flexible enough to keep growing with them. Enter FlexR, which is described as the Xero of fuel card billing.

The original platform wasn’t designed for the kind of growth they were experiencing. For many years, they experienced in excess of 40% growth per annum. Their business was built on a windows application running on servers in their office. As the business expanded, they knew there was a big risk of running their business this way and made the decision to digitally transform their business.

They hired their own developers and started again, taking the elements they liked from their legacy system and then rebuilt it. As they grew further, they knew they had to get their technology infrastructure out of the building and into the Cloud.

They needed to create a more intuitive and automated system to manage fuel card applications, customer information, comprehensive card management, transactions, and invoicing – specifically tailored for the fuel industry.

They needed an agile technology platform that would grow with them, and they needed an equally agile IT partner who could keep pace with the rapid growth they were experiencing.

We first worked with them to migrate their applications and users off the on-premise hardware onto Azure hosted VMs. This was an interim step prior to moving to a Platform as a service (PaaS) solution. On the PaaS side, we set up a CI/CD pipeline to help streamline the process of deploying new applications by automating the process of updating and deploying applications and testing the code before deployment.

The applications also migrated from using Application Gateways over to Azure Front Door to improve external access. Moving from Application Gateways to Azure Front Door means they can use the service across different regions, it simplifies SSL certificate management and provides greater control over the firewall at a lower price.

FlexR’s long term goal was to get away from VM’s and really embrace microservices. It was a long held ambition and with the Azure expertise provided by Securecom, we could make it happen.

Being part of their journey of digital transformation has been hugely rewarding for our team.

Irrespective of ongoing societal challenges and worsening economic conditions, New Zealand continues to power forward unperturbed — the ecosystem has once again raised the bar to set new levels of innovation.

“Enormous credit to the market-leading companies and individuals continuing to press ahead in helping customers innovate at pace – despite the notable difficulties – which once again demonstrates the depth of transformation taking place across the country. Congratulations Securecom, nothing can stop your pursuit of excellence.”

In 2022, Innovation Awards will honour the channel across eight categories, spanning Partner Innovation, Tech Innovation, NZ-wide Innovation, Start-up Innovation, Personal Innovation, Vendor Innovation, Distributor Innovation and Hall of Fame.

In streamlining the program, the aim is to increase focus on the pacesetters of the local market, those revving up the innovation engine and powering ahead in the delivery of transformative solutions and services.

Reflective of a diverse technology network, finalists range from large-scale multinational consultancy firms to emerging start-ups, alongside leading system integrators, managed service providers and solution consultants, plus cloud specialists, independent software vendors, boutique agencies and application developers. This is in addition to channel-centric vendors, telecommunications providers and supply chain experts.

Within this standout group, finalists are located across the entire country and represent all states and territories, spanning New Zealand.

Collectively, Innovation Awards in 2022 stands tall as the leading forum for setting the industry benchmark for ecosystem excellence across New Zealand.

The winners will now be selected by an executive panel of industry judges – acknowledging creativity, innovation, and excellence – before being announced at a celebration dinner at Cordis, Auckland on Thursday 27 October.

Securecom signs 5-year IT services agreement with Radius Care

Auckland, New Zealand, August 2022

Radius Care, one of the country’s leading aged care providers will benefit from a 5-year agreement, signed with award-winning IT leader, Securecom.

The agreement covers the implementation of Securecom’s TotalCARE solution which is their comprehensive IT support service and is an extension of the existing partnership, with Radius Care already implementing Securecom’s industry-leading TotalNET Cloud Based Network solution across 25 sites nationwide.

As New Zealand businesses are challenged more and more by the impact of skills shortages, Securecom’s TotalCARE solution,  that enables customers to leverage Securecom’s scale to access a wide range of IT skills for a fixed price every month, is proving extremely popular.

“Our choice to change IT service provider was based on our requirements around service and communication as well as cost.  The service we received from Securecom when we selected their TotalNET solution which we implemented recently was great, so they were an obvious candidate to include in our RFP when looking for a new IT support service provider.

We liked the fact that Securecom quickly understood our business requirements and responded with the complete TotalCARE solution covering all the required elements for reliable and dependable support. As a single-sourced solution, this provides confidence that we’ll enjoy the best possible support from a recognised market leader.” comments Kayleen Currie, Information Systems Manager at Radius Care.

“We have a strong portfolio of health clients, and we are thrilled to add Radius Care to a growing list of leading businesses throughout New Zealand that are making the switch to Securecom. Our cloud based TotalNET solution that Radius implemented recently has a proven track record to help companies reduce their costs, improve their security posture and provide a network platform upon which other high value services can be built” says Greg Mikkelsen, Sales and Marketing Director at Securecom.

“The addition of TotalCARE will give Radius Care a comprehensive IT support solution that will provide them with monthly price certainty for a high quality IT support service to keep users safe, operational and up-to-date. Radius Care do a fantastic job here in New Zealand and it’s great for our team to be able to work with such a purposeful organisation.” adds Mikkelsen.

“Securecom wins this award for implementing a range of modern, managed workplace ICT services for its customer, a business of just 20 people, moving the organisation to a secure digital environment that allowed it to grow cost effectively. Securecom delivered technology leadership, ICT continuous improvement, governance and innovation, ultimately becoming its customer’s IT department

Greg Mikkelsen, Sales and Marketing Director for Securecom “We are thrilled to accept this award and thank you to Reseller News for putting on a great event to celebrate Kiwi innovation and  recognising the work of the team at Securecom with Christian Savings.

Securecom Signs 5-Year Partnership With New Zealand Health Group – Disabled People Benefit From ICT And Health Sector Leaders’ Tech Innovation

Auckland, New Zealand, May 3, 2022

People with disability will soon benefit from the 5-year partnership agreement between award-winning IT leader, Securecom, and New Zealand Health Group, the country’s largest network of community health, disability, and wellbeing providers.

The arrangement involves the implementation of Securecom’s industry-leading TotalNET Cloud Based Network solution across over 200 of New Zealand Health Group’s NZCare and Geneva Community Living community homes for people with disabilities. This will enhance the service provided to the people they support by enabling more effective and synchronised communication across their community homes.

“Consolidating the services from various IT providers we work with into one simple and innovative solution from Securecom will increase connection and add further to the quality of support that NZCare and Geneva Community Living provide to disabled people, their whānau and our workforce,” says Vicki Stewart, Director of Disability and Social Services at New Zealand Health Group.

Securecom proposed a standardised cloud-based SD-WAN and Wi-Fi solution nationwide across all the Group’s community homes that was smart, simple, secure, and would provide an excellent end user experience with consistent and optimum WAN connectivity.

Key elements of the solution requirements were that it had to be designed for SaaS and private/public cloud, with granular insights and control into the network and application performance down to an end user level. Other critical requirements were site resilience, DDoS protection, and Enterprise Security.

“We are delighted to be selected to partner with New Zealand Health Group after a rigorous request for proposal process involving key major network operators in New Zealand. Our TotalNET solution is increasingly being used by New Zealand businesses to lower their total cost of ownership, improve their security and end user experience as they move into a cloud-centric world,” says Greg Mikkelsen, Sales and Marketing Director at Securecom.

Peter Radich, Chief Digital Officer for New Zealand Health Group, says, “The decision to partner with Securecom was based on a number of factors. We liked the consistency of the approach nationwide, ensuring a standardised solution that is easy to manage and cost-effective. Given the nature of what we do, security is critically important. We liked the security aspect of their solution with a firewall at every site combined with 4G backup in the inevitable case of broadband outages. Finally, having our network looked after by our existing IT service desk with insights from the end user, right through to the data source, will ensure an optimised experience for all our teams nationwide.”

“The TotalNET Cloud Network we are implementing for New Zealand Health Group will improve the security, visibility, and control of their entire IT environment. It’s an exciting project to be involved in on many levels. One of Securecom’s core values is “Caring”, so we are thrilled to partner with an organisation that embodies that daily to support people with disability,” adds Mikkelsen.

Microsoft On-Prem vulnerabilities, again.

New patch Tuesday revealed a new critical “Remote code Execution vulnerability” within On-Prem Microsoft exchange servers. Successful exploitation could allow an actor to gain remote code execution with elevated privileges on the impacted device. This can facilitate the deployment of malware to enable continued access to the compromised system, even after the system has been patched.

Microsoft Exchange Online is not known to be affected by these vulnerabilities. While there is no information available that indicates these vulnerabilities have been exploited, Securecom is aware of multiple actors exploiting previously identified Exchange vulnerabilities (hafnium) that were patched by Microsoft in March 2021.

CVE-2021-28480 has a staggering 9.8 cvss (Common Vulnerability Scoring System) value and it is advised to patch your Microsoft Exchange 2013, 2016 and 2019 Servers as soon as possible (read: immediately).
Securecom immediately stood up a rapid response team. We alerted all our customers with on-prem MS Exchange servers of the possible threat and initialised a remediation plan.

If you need any assistance with remediation of this vulnerability, please do reach out to us. More information can be found on Microsoft’s update guide page.
